Frilly neck lizardFrillneck Lizard
Clinging to the leafless top of a dead pandanus palm, this Frilled Lizard endeavors to look bigger and more dangerous by expanding the frill of bright warning colours, which normally lies folded around his neck. The wider he gapes the more the frill stands out, for it is supported on long slender extensions of the hyoid bones which move as the mouth is opened. If his bluff works, and his enemy hesitates a moment, the lizard will drop to the ground and run at great speed to a higher more secure treetop retreat.
